Batiles:
1. Which do you put more value on, the 'sanctity of life' or the 'quality of life'? Why? Be sure to elaborate.

2. After careful considerations of the various ethical theories/views we discussed, what “personal moral system or code” can you come up with and which you can adopt? Be sure to talk about the values, precepts/ideas, and other elements that should comprise this “personal moral system or code”. Include your conception of freedom and accountability in this given moral system and your view of what it means to be a moral individual.

BATILES Questions for the Third Exam Empty

FIRST QUESTION:

If asked on what I would put value on, whether sanctity or quality of life, I think neither of the two. Neither, not because I do not value life enough to see it as something holy and valuable, but more of how could a person know if his/her actions are directed to sanctity or of a valuable life? It is hard for me to choose between two things I do not have clear examples of in my mind. Is leading a sacred life means having to live in the service of God and his people? To be a good example to everyone? To be a martyr? Does quality of life means having to live by one’s own dreams and principles or to live a life centered on the welfare of other people? It is hard for me to grasp how a person can solely choose one thing from another, to be holy and not be captive of the desires of man at all? To live life to the fullest and not even once, be subject to anxiety, depression, and of wanting to end it all?

For me, what we must do is to use all the things God has blessed us with. Be it talents, intelligence, wealth, charm, ideals…all of these to be put into good use, for good reasons and outcomes. By doing this, we as persons, would have the possibility of living the sanctity or quality of life. Thus, we are closer to what I think is a “good’ life. The good life does not pertain to goodness of actions but on how happiness is shared from within to other people, then those people one has shared his/her blessings with, would in turn also share their blessings to other people, to live a life wherein helping, camaraderie and empathy become as natural as eating or drinking.

What I’m saying as a good life might be similar to living a quality life, yet for me, living a quality life means having a plan of what not and what to do so as to have a valuable, righteous life while to live a good life means being carefree, to enjoy God’s blessings and to share it with family, friends…to anyone one would cross paths with. For in this way an action is done not because it is to be done or it is right to be done but more of how we are naturally motivated, naturally urged by our beings to help, create friendships and to love.

SECOND QUESTION:

For me, man, contrary to what Existentialism states of human existence, is not free. Existentialism says that man is free for he is able to choose what actions he would do and to somehow direct the consequences of every action. I do not believe this at all for how can man be free when in the first place, some choices are not available to everyone. Like if a baby boy has a terminal disease, does he have the choice to his life? To be able to experience adolescence and manhood? To live like other kids? No right? So, in that very example, we could see how we are not given all the choices, that somehow or in someway all we need to do is just accept our fate, for we could never intervene with the will of God, for at the end day, he is the creator, and we, his creations are made to serve a purpose.

And that for me, is my personal moral system. It is very different from the Divine Command Theory, for the Divine Command theory bases its ideologies with what is written in the bible, with God’s teachings of what should and not be done. My personal moral system revolves around concepts of “Purpose”, “Fulfillment” and of trust and faith in the Lord.

I believe that each and everyone of us has a purpose in the world, of why we were created and born to be of a certain gender, age, nationality, to be of possession of characteristics making us unique and one of a kind in this world, and to go through experiences that greatly strengthens our character and beliefs. To be moral persons, we need to able to fulfill our purpose on earth, a loving child to parents, a caring sibling, a reliable friend and more…we would know that we have fulfilled our ultimate purpose God has created us for when we would finally be able to feel strong, lasting fulfillment within us, to feel overwhelming happiness and satisfaction.

With the pursuit of fulfilling one’s purpose, one must have complete trust in the lord, to not let our will to live our purpose be overshadowed by fear and anxiety of life’s uncertainties. To serve our purpose with accordance to God’s will, to be an instrument of how God wants the world and the people to turn into…for in this way we become accountable not only of fulfilling god’s will and of our own fulfillment but also of other’s welfare and betterment. Thus becoming a moral person.
